For years, part of my work has involved professional athletes, people with access to the most extraordinary performance resources going: physiotherapists, nutritionists, sports scientists, recovery protocols built down to the individual. The thing that struck me, working alongside them, wasn't how hard they trained, but how precisely their recovery was managed, and how much of that precision came down to genetics. Two athletes doing identical training loads can recover at completely different rates because their biology isn't identical, and nobody in elite sport treats that as controversial. They simply plan around it.

Then I'd go back to working with senior leaders, people carrying every bit as much load, arguably more, for longer, with far less support, and watch them being handed exactly the same generic advice as everyone else: a wellbeing webinar, a breathing app, "just build some resilience," as if recovery were one-size-fits-all for executives in a way elite sport had already worked out it absolutely isn't.

That gap is where BTR came from. If genetics shapes how an athlete's body recovers, it also shapes how a person's nervous system and stress response recover, and professionals are under a kind of sustained psychological strain that keeps climbing, with almost none of the individualised science athletes take for granted. I wanted to bring that same precision, DNA-informed rather than generic, to the people I work with every day: senior leaders whose job is to keep performing under pressure with no off-season.

So I partnered with a leading genetics company and put a huge amount of research into building something that treats resilience the way it actually behaves in the body and the brain, rather than as a personality trait you either have or don't. It's also where my long-standing interest in the difference between endurance and resilience really sharpened, because pushing through until you break is endurance, while recovering well enough and specifically enough to keep performing, deliberately rather than by accident, is resilience. Most of the leaders I meet have been praised their whole careers for the first one and were never taught the second.
